Watch Description
What Makes The Boston 074 Unique:
The Boston 074 was created to commemorate two defining moments in American history separated by nearly two centuries. Released in honor of America’s 250th birthday, this Special Edition unites one of the last great American military-era pocket watch movements with a case designed and manufactured in the United States, creating a timepiece that celebrates both the nation’s industrial legacy and its enduring spirit of innovation.
At its heart is a 17-jewel Waltham movement manufactured in 1945, during the closing chapter of World War II. By this point, Waltham had become one of America’s most important suppliers of precision timing instruments, producing robust movements that supported military operations throughout the war. Many 16-size movements from this era, including the Grade 1617 family, were originally engineered to withstand the demanding conditions required by the U.S. Army Air Forces before later finding new purpose in civilian railroad, transit, and industrial service. That military heritage remains evident in the movement’s emphasis on durability, reliability, and legibility.
The dial reflects that philosophy perfectly. Its crisp white enamel-style finish provides exceptional contrast against oversized Arabic numerals and bold cathedral-style hands, creating a design intended to be read instantly under any conditions. Surrounding the dial is a vivid red outer minute track, a feature collectors immediately recognize as a military-inspired design element that allowed for rapid and precise time reading. While visually striking, it also serves as a reminder that this movement was born during an era when every second could matter.
For this special edition, Vortic has taken that practicality one step further by applying custom lume to both the numerals and hands. During daylight, the lume blends seamlessly into the vintage-inspired dial. In darkness, however, the watch transforms completely, glowing with exceptional clarity while preserving the original military aesthetic. The result is a rare combination of historic authenticity and modern functionality that few antique movements can offer.
Turning the watch over reveals a movement that collectors will immediately appreciate. The bridges display Waltham’s clean lightly-brushed finishing alongside polished steel winding wheels, simple jewel settings holding lab-synthesized ruby bearings, and a finely regulated balance assembly. Unlike many earlier decorative movements, this one emphasizes purposeful engineering over ornamentation, reflecting the wartime priorities under which it was produced while still exhibiting the high level of craftsmanship expected from one of America’s premier manufacturers.
The modern Heritage Military case reinforces the watch’s historical narrative. Finished in deep black DLC-coated stainless steel, it creates a dramatic contrast against the bright white dial while providing exceptional durability. The pre-patinated bronze crown introduces a warm, period-correct accent that will continue developing character through wear. Included with the watch are both oxblood and black American-made Cordovan leather straps, allowing the owner to tailor the watch’s personality, whether highlighting its military roots or giving it a more refined appearance.
Exclusive to this Semiquincentennial Edition is a specially engraved caseback commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. More than a decorative detail, the engraving permanently marks this watch as part of a limited celebration of American craftsmanship, connecting the story of a 1945 Waltham movement with the nation’s milestone birthday in 2026.
The Boston 074 is ultimately more than a vintage watch housed in a modern case. It is a tribute to American resilience, honoring a movement built during one of the country’s most consequential years and preserving it for generations to come through modern engineering. Released on Independence Day during America’s 250th anniversary, it stands as both a functional instrument and a lasting reminder of the ingenuity, precision, and craftsmanship that defined American watchmaking at its peak.
Movement Manufacturer Information
The movement inside of this watch was made by Waltham Watch Company. We call this model "The Boston" because of the company's proximity to the city.
Also known as American Watch Company and American Waltham Watch Company, Waltham was one of the leaders in attempting an entirely new concept, machines making machines. Prior to this, a watchmaker would hand-make each part of a movement one-at-a-time. Operating from 1851-1957, Waltham called its product the "Scientific Watch." Waltham's innovative, precise machining techniques made parts interchangeable, and their early version of the assembly line made high-quality watches efficient to produce. Legend has it that Henry Ford drew inspiration for his assembly line production from a visit to Waltham's factory. Located on the bank of the Charles River in "Watch City" (Waltham), Massachusetts, the factory has since been converted to apartment lofts.

Let customers speak for us
The Movement
The engine that powers this watch is an antique American pocket watch movement. All the gears and springs that make it tell time are roughly 100 years old on average. We call these watches the American Artisan Series because we're celebrating the history and legacy of the artisan watchmakers who built this engineering marvel a century ago in the United States.
The Story
Today most pocket watches are scrapped for the gold or silver of the case (the outside of the antique timepiece), leaving the inside (what we call the "movement") as trash.
We take pride in upcycling these pieces of American history by salvaging as many as we can, then preserving them inside our wristwatches.
Our expert team of watchmakers restores the antique movement and then we manufacture a custom wristwatch case here in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The Strap
We partnered with Worn & Wound to produce a custom set of straps for our American Artisan Series watches. We now have 15 different colors to choose from including our two Horween Shell Cordovan options. These straps are made in the USA and are based on the Windup Model 2 Premium strap that Worn and Wound offers.
